This lesson we used two different toners, sepia, giving a bronzed effect and the other being a deep blue.
The first step was to have sample prints to test with. Soak each print in water.
Then once left to soak for about a minute, if toning with
- The sepia, bleach the print for two minutes, then remove and rinse of excess toner
- With the blue toner bleaching is not necessary as the bleach was mixed in with the toner.
Finally the print would be left in the toner, for any amount of time to achieve the desired effect
During the toner it's the metallic silver which is converted into a sulfide compound. A good example of a professional who is known for their toning is Henry Fox Talbot, he is one of the major Victorian photographers, he used sepia toning for many of his photographs. Just below to the right is an example of his work.
I have a double page spread in my photography book with my toning examples

We have been planning a short film for a while now and i have had the idea of filming myself on my motorcycle, i will have clips of me riding with various viewpoints, many which are unusual but have a good effect, i think thta one of the best viewpoints hads got to be wormseye, i love this effect because it has an empowering factor, my motorcycle has a mean image and so will go well coupled with wormseye as well as black and white, the music will be of my choice and i will sample a number of tracks which i think suit
A light box or tent is used alongside studio lighting to soften the harsh strobe flash from studio lighting. The school had just bought one so we were trying it out. Here are the first photographs using the light box and I like what it does to the pictures, gives them a more natural feel to them. The picture to the right is the light box from the outside (just setting the scene) Inside we chose to create a road scene using card for a road, grass, leaves and rocks for the roadside and toy cars for the crashed up cars. we had to shed the grass and leaves into miniture size to make it more realistic, we then took the pictures in macro to make the cars look bigger than they are and try to recreate a realistic scenario, we also tried to take them from a point of view of a person on the ground to give it a realistic effect.
I have been thinking of what i can include into my short film, my topic is motion photography.
I have come up with the idea of me on my motorcycle riding through twisty country lanes with a variety of camera shots; both on and off of the motorcycle
I plan to attach the camera in a number of abstract and very common shots, i will have very short viewing times on many of the clips for example gear changes.
Here i have taken a few photos of freeze motion, where there isnt any motion blur, i like the effects of this as it brings out all the detail of the subject
here is one of my brother riding my fathers motorcycle
you can see in the background that some of the trees have a slight blur, this is due to the sweeping effect which has to be performed to create such a shot...
I have also cropped another image to form a letterbox effect, this limits the viewer to very little, this is a good effect and love the contrast of logos
here is another photograph that was taken in Hastings at the boat park, I have captured assorted rubbish bags waving in the sea winds, I have yet to edit this to give higher contrast and more defined areas of motion, for example the wind is very violent as it is by the sea side......

Sam
there is some really good infomation and images here but I would like to see more independant work and more of the images you have taken. You need to show how you reached some of hte outcomes and show creative and innovative ideas.
1)Brian Percivalis aBritishfilm director, working mainly in television.
He has directedmany films and his nine-minute short About a Girl won the BAFTA Award for Best Short Film and several film festival awards in 2001.
2) Boy and Bicycle is the first film made by Ridley Scott. The black and white short was made on 16mm film while Scott was a photography student at the Royal College of Art in London in 1962.
Although a very early work - Scott would not direct his first feature for another 15 years - the film is significant in that it features a number of visual elements that would be become motiffs of Scott's work. The film features the cooling towers of the Imperial Chemical Industries works at Billingham. The central element of the Boy and the Bicycle is re-used in Scott's advert for Hovis of the early 1970s. The film features Scott's younger brother Tony as the boy.
Scott secured finance from the British Film Institute to complete the editing and sound in 1965 including a track by John Barry called "Onward Christian Spacemen". Scott wanted to use the existing recording by Barry, but the composer was so impressed by the young film maker he agreed to produce a new recording for the film at limited cost.
3) The Terminal Bar was one of the toughest bars on Manhattan's 8th Street and for 10 years was owned by barman and manager Sheldon Nadelman, who took more than 2500 photos of his customers. This film looks back on the character and history of the bar through Nadelman's personal reflections and provides an interesting account of the changing culture of the city and the ultimate change in the area to be cleaner but perhaps lacking in the character of those times.
For this task we chose to edit some photographs in various ways, the first was mono tone effects, for this
we started off with a basic image:
then we applied some basic photoshop tools e.g. below
1.Open toning image from DVD.
2.Click on adjustment layer and select Hue/saturation
3.tick the colorize box (image will instantly be toned)
4.Move Hue to get the colour you want and saturation to get the required intensity.
5.Try 220 and 40 for a blue toned effect
6.Try 30 30 for a sepia look
7.To emulate warm tone effect, try toning hue of 20 and then completely de-saturate to get a black and white result. Gently increase saturation slider until you get the hint of orangey-yellow you require
8.For cool tone effect, set hue at around 220 and a low saturation figure, around 20.
the result was a great effect:
Increase saturation without blocking out colours
Starting off with a basic image:
adding some simple effects e.g.
Open up under-saturated image (saturation.jpg)
Ctrl J to make a copy background layer
With new top layer active, go to filter, blur, Gaussian blur, enter radius of around 5 pixels. (the whole image will soften)
Change the blending mode by selecting normal in the layers palette and then color (blurred effect will disappear as this allows only the colours to transfer to layer underneath)
CtrlU. Crank up saturation slider (can go further now) until you get to intensity you like. Click ok.
The result is a great sharpened image with highlighted tones
Changing colours of individual items
Starting off with a basic image:
and applying the effects shown below:
Lasso tool, make a rough selection around phone and postbox
Hit ctrl J and punch into a new layer
Hit ctrl U and in the Hue/sat palette, click Master, select Reds. Crunch sliders together.
Select left hand eye dropper, click on red colour of postbox.
Move saturation slider to -100. Holding shift key, click on areas until box turns to grey.
Change colour by moving saturation slider back to centre and then adjust Hue until you’ve got colour you like.
In photography, toning is a photographic process carried out on black and white photographic prints to change their colour.
In this lesson we used a choice of two toners, one was a sepia toner which make the print look dated and the other being a very deep blue.
The First Step was to soak each print of our choice in water for roughly one minute
Once fully saturated, soak the print in bleach for roughly two minutes (this only applies if sepia toning) if using theBlue toner bleaching isnt used as the bleach is mixed wih the toner
The last step was to leave the print in the toner for as long as it needed; the average prin takes around a minute ut this varies form print to print.
A well known professional for toning is..............
